Columbus Day & Indigenous Peoples’ Day | Neighborhood Friends

At Neighborhood Friends, every day is an opportunity to explore, ask questions, and discover the beautiful world we share!

Every October, families and communities across the United States recognize Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, or both. These observances invite us to learn about history, explore different cultural traditions, and understand why the stories we tell about the past matter.

At Neighborhood Friends, we believe that learning begins with curiosity, grows through kindness, and becomes meaningful when children discover that every person and culture has a story worth understanding.

Come along on a fun educational adventure!

🚢 What Is Columbus Day?

Columbus Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed on the second Monday of October. It commemorates Christopher Columbus’s 1492 voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and its historical significance in the relationship between Europe and the Americas.

However, it is important to remember that the Americas were already home to millions of people, including Indigenous nations with their own languages, traditions, communities, and histories, long before Columbus arrived.

History is full of discoveries, encounters, and changes. Learning about it means exploring different perspectives and understanding how past events affected different people.

Little learner question:
If you could travel back in time to learn about a historical event, what would you want to discover?

🌎 What Is Indigenous Peoples’ Day?

Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors Indigenous peoples, their cultures, their histories, and their continuing contributions to society.

Indigenous communities are diverse, with distinct languages, traditions, art, music, knowledge, and ways of life. Their cultures are not just part of the past; Indigenous people and communities continue to shape our world today.

Many communities in the United States observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the same date as Columbus Day. The meaning and recognition of these observances vary by location.

At Neighborhood Friends, we encourage children to approach different cultures with respect, curiosity, and open hearts.

Let’s think together:
What makes your family special? Is it a favorite recipe, a song, a celebration, a story, or a tradition?

Every family has something meaningful to share!

💡 5 Fun Facts for Curious Little Minds

1. Columbus sailed with three ships.
His 1492 expedition included the Santa María, the Niña, and the Pinta. The Santa María was the largest of the three.

2. The Americas were already inhabited.
Indigenous peoples had lived throughout the Americas for thousands of years before Columbus’s arrival. Their communities had rich histories, knowledge, and traditions.

3. Indigenous cultures are incredibly diverse.
There is no single Indigenous language, tradition, or way of life. Hundreds of distinct federally recognized tribal nations exist in the United States, alongside other Indigenous communities.

4. Stories help us understand history.
Learning from different perspectives helps us understand that the same historical event can have different meanings and consequences for different people.

5. Culture is part of everyday life.
The foods we eat, the languages we speak, the music we enjoy, and the traditions we share can all teach us about our families and communities.

✨ A little challenge: Can your child remember two facts from this list? Ask them to draw a picture of what they learned!

🎨 Our Little Explorers’ Activity: A World of Stories

Learning becomes even more exciting when little hands get creative!

Here is a simple activity families can enjoy together at home or educators can adapt for the classroom.

You will need:

  • Paper or cardboard
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Stickers or other child-safe craft materials
  • Curiosity and imagination!

Let’s get creative:

  1. Ask your child to draw something that represents their family or community.
  2. It could be a favorite food, a special celebration, a song, a place, or a family tradition.
  3. Invite your child to tell you the story behind the drawing.
  4. Talk about how other families may have different traditions and how we can learn from one another.
  5. Celebrate every child’s creation and encourage everyone to listen kindly.

Learning goals: Creativity, communication, cultural awareness, listening skills, and respect for others.

For younger children, keep the activity simple, age-appropriate, and focused on sharing, colors, shapes, and storytelling.

❤️ How Can We Celebrate Respect and Kindness?

You do not need a big celebration to teach children meaningful lessons. Small everyday actions can make a difference.

Here are four simple ways to help children develop respect and appreciation for others:

  • Read diverse stories: Choose age-appropriate books that represent different families, communities, and experiences.
  • Explore music and art: Discover creative traditions from different parts of the world.
  • Practice thoughtful questions: Encourage children to ask questions kindly instead of making assumptions.
  • Celebrate what makes us unique: Help children understand that people can have different backgrounds and still share many things in common.

At Neighborhood Friends, we know that early childhood is a wonderful time to nurture empathy, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.

👨‍👩‍👧 A Special Challenge for Families

Tonight, try our “One Family, One Story” challenge!

Gather together and invite each family member to share one tradition, memory, or activity that makes them happy.

Ask your little one:

  • What is one special thing about our family?
  • What would you like to learn about another culture?
  • How can we make someone feel welcome?

There are no perfect answers. The goal is to encourage conversation, connection, and curiosity.

Parents can share their answers in the comments: What is one family tradition you would love to pass on to the next generation?
